What Happens to Recycled Drywall?

One of the most common questions we receive is:

"What actually happens to drywall after it's recycled?"

The answer is simple: drywall contains valuable gypsum that can be recovered and beneficially reused.

Step 1: Collection

Clean drywall scrap is collected from:

  • Construction sites

  • Transfer stations

  • Landfills

  • Drywall distributors

The cleaner the material, the more opportunities exist for beneficial reuse.

Step 2: Processing

The drywall is processed to separate:

  • Gypsum

  • Paper

  • Contaminants

Specialized equipment allows recyclers to recover gypsum while minimizing waste.

Step 3: Beneficial Reuse

Recovered gypsum may be used in:

  • Agricultural soil improvement

  • Landscaping applications

  • Industrial manufacturing

  • Future wallboard production

Paper can also be recycled or reused depending on local market conditions.

Why This Matters

Every ton of drywall recycled is one less ton occupying valuable landfill space.

As construction activity continues to grow, recycling creates a practical pathway toward a more circular construction industry.
